Design of 3D-Printed Heterogeneous Reactor Systems To Overcome Incompatibility Hurdles when Combining Metal and Enzyme Catalysis in a One-Pot Process

Congratulations to Nadiya for her recent publication.

Nadia recently published together with her supervisors Harald Gröger (University of Bielefeld) and Jonas Gurauskis (ÆNEAM) a paper with the title: “Design of 3D-Printed Heterogeneous Reactor Systems To OvercomeIncompatibility Hurdles when Combining Metal and EnzymeCatalysis in a One-Pot Process”

In the research work described therein, a long-standing limitation in the field of chemoenzymatic synthesis was addressed, how to combine metal catalysis and enzyme catalysis in a one-pot syntheses in cases when the metal component strongly inactivates the enzyme. The solution found is based on 3D-printing of a metal-containing ceramics (3D-printing technology at ÆNEAM.S.L.) and applying such a heterogenized metal component then together with the enzyme component in one reactor. This concept has been exemplified for the combination of Pd/Cu-catalyzed Wacker-oxidation (with Cu being a critical component for enzymes when being used in dissolved form in water) and enzymatic reduction.
